ChemCases: Refrigerants - 8. CFCs and the Ozone Layer

Refrigerants for the 21st Century 8. CFCs and the Ozone Layer By 1972 world-wide production of CFC-11 and CFC-12 had reached 0.3 and 0.5 million tons/year, respectively, and was expected to increase by more than 9%/year in future years. As pointed out earlier, the generally desirable chemical stability of these and other fluorocarbons meant that they would accumulate in the earth's atmosphere as they escape from from their valuable uses. Subsequently, it was established that the atmospheric lives of CFC-11 and CFC-12 are 50 and 102 years, respectively. OZONE DEPLETION AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE Welcome to the CIESIN thematic guide on ozone depletion issues. The purpose of this guide is to help you find selected key documents that pertain to the issue of ozone depletion: causes, human and environmental effects, and policy responses. The 1985 report of the discovery of an "ozone hole" over Antarctica focused attention on the idea that humans can have a significant impact on the global environment. This discovery, along with evidence that ozone is being lost at nearly all latitudes outside the tropics, has prompted much research into the causes of ozone depletion and the biological effects of increased ultraviolet radiation exposure. The potential effects on humans and the environment have led to international resolutions designed to g Read More

General Chemistry Curriculum Supplement: Refrigerants

Refrigerants for the 21st Century ChemCases A Case-Study General Chemistry Curriculum Supplement Dr. William Gumprecht Refrigeration for the preservation of food, blood, human organs and pharmaceuticals and the cooling of living spaces is one of the critical chemical developments of the 20th century. Refrigeration has depended upon refrigerant gases - chlorofluorocarbons - that efficiently carry out therefrigeration cycle. In 1974, Sherwood Rowland and Mario Molina predicted that chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant gases would reach the high stratosphere and there damage the protective mantle of the oxygen allotrope, ozone. In 1985 we discovered the "ozone hole" over the Antarctic and by 1990 Rowland and Molina's prediction was proved correct. By the time Sherwood and Molina received Read More

Published by Australian Academy of Science KEY TEXT Earth's sunscreen – the ozone layer This topic is sponsored by the Australian Government's National Innovation Awareness Strategy . The ozone layer screens out the sun?s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Can we reverse its destruction? You will get more from this topic if you have mastered the basics of electromagnetic radiation – these links will take you to an annotated list of sites with helpful background information. A natural balance keeps us well supplied with ozone Up in the stratosphere , small amounts of ozone are constantly being made by the action of sunlight on oxygen. At the same time, ozone is being broken down by natural processes. The total amount of ozone usually stays constant because its formation and destructio Read More

Each year since the late 1970s, much of the protective layer of stratospheric ozone above Antarctica has disappeared during September, creating what is popularly known as the ozone hole . The Antarctic hole now measures about 9 million square miles, nearly the size of North America. Less dramatic, still significant, depletion of ozone levels has been recorded around the gl Read More
